Pastos Grandes is the name of a volcanic crater and a crater lake in the southwest of the South American Andean state of Bolivia . It reaches an altitude of 5802 m and is located in the province of Sur Lípez in the Department of Potosí . It is part of the Bolivian Cordillera Occidental , which extends over 500 kilometers from north to south on the western edge of the Altiplano .
Pastos Grandes is counted on a volcanic explosive scale as a volcanic eruption of the second highest level "VEI" (from English Volcanic Explosivity Index ) 7 and in the history of its eruptions has left behind large fields of ignimbrite , pumice and ash-rich deposits with a circumference of several thousand cubic kilometers .
