history

Originally, the area south and south-west of today's historic center of Aspern was a swamp and meadow landscape in the course of the extreme left branch of the unregulated Danube . In the area of today's Astrid-Lindgren-Park there were two small ponds at the beginning of the 19th century, which are located between the western end of Aspern, the Martinskirche and the herb garden . In the course of the 19th century, the Aspern cemetery at that time , which surrounded Martinskirche as a churchyard, was expanded to include this area. When space in the cemetery became scarce at the end of the 19th century, a new, larger cemetery was built on the other side of Langobardenstrasse in the area of the herb garden . On the general city plan of 1912, the area of today's park was designated as a “projected public space”. By 1938 at the latest, there were meadows and trees here as well as paths that largely correspond to today's.

After the Vienna City Council shot in June 2013 to give more consideration to women when naming new or previously unnamed parks and traffic areas , numerous parks, streets and squares were named after women in Aspern, especially in the Seestadt Aspern urban development area. So the park was next to the church of St. Martin, who previously unofficially (like many other adjoining churches parks) Church Park was called, following a decision by November 26, 2013 the name of Astrid Lindgren Park, commemorating the Swedish writer and children's author Astrid Lindgren .

Location and description

War memorial

The main part of the 6,240 m² Astrid-Lindgren-Park has a triangular base and is bounded on all three sides by the traffic area Asperner Heldenplatz . The green areas north of the access road to the church and the parish center are also part of the park. The park's facilities include a fenced-in children's playground and seating along the paths and at the playground. Further park benches have been set up on the sidewalk next to the access road that crosses the park. An extension of tram line 25 to Seestadt Aspern that is possible, but not yet decided, according to Vienna Municipal Department 18 (urban development and planning) provides for a route through the park instead of the access road.

The 1914–1918 war memorial is located on a lawn in the southwestern part of the park . It consists of a low, plastered wall with an artificial stone on the right side bearing the inscription World War 1914–1918 . On the front of the wall there is a metal inscription plaque with the names of 57 men from Aspern who died in the First World War or who are missing. The time when the monument was erected is not known.
