Patchday

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patch Tuesday is an unofficial term that means a day on which the company Microsoft software updates ( English patches ) for its products published. The patch day was introduced in October 2003. Previously, it was common for a patch to be made available via Microsoft Update as soon as it was completed and checked . Since then, patches have been collected at Microsoft and usually released on the second Tuesday of each month. Microsoft justifies this change in security policy with the intention of making the work of administrators and their planning of updates easier. Previously, updates could appear at any time; With the introduction of the patch day, there is now a fixed date as the publication time. Administrators can now reserve this day in order to install the updates. Patch Tuesday at Microsoft usually starts at 10:00 Pacific Time (Los Angeles), this corresponds to 19:00 CET (may differ due to different summer / winter time changes).

In the meantime, other companies have also taken Microsoft's strategy as a model. Since 2005, for example, patches have only been published quarterly at Oracle . Adobe joined this practice at the end of 2005 and SAP in September 2010 .

With Windows 10 , Microsoft relies on a modified update procedure. Apart from the critical updates that appear monthly, Microsoft releases optional updates at different times in the second half of the month.

Microsoft also provides patches for dangerous security gaps outside of the patch days in order to minimize the risk potential of serious security gaps.
