Patna was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha . Its capital was the place Balangir . The principality of the Hindu Chauhan - Rajputs was founded in the 13th century by Raja Ramai Deo. It came under the suzerainty of Sambalpur (1797) in the course of the Marathas , which became a British protectorate in 1817 and a British-Indian province in 1849. In 1865 Patna became an independent princely state. In 1901 it had an area of 6503 km² and a population of 278,000.

The last Maharaja, Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo , joined the Eastern States Union in August 1947 . On January 1, 1948, this union was dissolved and Patna was incorporated into Orissa ( Odisha ) and thus India (see History of India ). On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved. The Maharaja went into politics and was party chairman of the Ganatantra Parishad from 1950 to 1962 , as well as a member of parliament, minister and from 1967 to 1971 chief minister of Orissa .
