Patna Museum

The Patna Museum ( Hindi पटना संग्रहालय ) in the city of Patna in the northern Indian state of Bihar is one of the most important regional archaeological museums in the country.

location

Yakshini (2nd century BC)

The Patna Museum is located in a colonial building on Buddha Marg in the heart of the city, approx. 1.5 km northwest of the train station and approx. 1 km southwest of the Golghar granary.

history

After the separation from Bengal in 1912, the need for a separate museum for Bihar became clear. A temporary solution opened its doors as early as 1915, but in 1929 all the exhibits that had been collected up to that point were moved to the now completed new building.

Collections

The museum includes numerous Buddhist finds from the area around the ancient city of Pataliputra , especially from the religious centers in the area (e.g. Rajgir , Nalanda and Gaya ), as well as medieval Hindu sculptures. A petrified tree can also be seen.

Others

A new museum building has been planned since 2012.
