Paton's Mill

Paton's Mill , also Paton's Woolen Mill or Marshall's Mill , is a former water mill in the Scottish town of Tillicoultry in the Council Area of Clackmannanshire . In 1972 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

The mill is on Lower Mill Street in the southwest of the city. It is one of eight mills along the two-kilometer-long Tillicoultry Burn , which runs through the Mill Glen valley from the north and flows into the Devonian south of Tillicoultry , and the second largest in the Hillfoots Villages . Knitwear, scarves, tartans and tweed were produced. At the London Industrial Exhibition in 1851 , their products were awarded a gold medal. In the late 1980s only four of the mill buildings remained and Paton's Mill was the only one still in operation. The mill was then given up and converted into a residential building by 2001 at the latest.

The company was founded in 1825 as J&D Paton's Woolen Mill . In the 1830s the building fell victim to a fire and was rebuilt in 1836 with a new design. The construction phase is divided into three sections, with six window axes probably beginning at the eastern end. The 14 window axes in the west probably belong to the youngest section. The 11.7 m wide, elongated building is almost orthogonal to the stream running to the west, which once drove the machinery of the wool mill. It consists of roughly hewn into square shape quarried stone from yellowish sandstone . The three-story building has an extended attic below the slate-covered gable roof . There is a single saddle dormer near the west end . On the eaves side, windows are arranged on 34 vertical axes. Windows and doors have cuboid lintels . There are two window axes on the western side of the gable, while the opposite side of the gable has no windows.
