The Patriarch's Palace (formerly Palace of the Chamber of Deputies , Romanian Palatul Patriarhiei ) is a listed building in the 3rd sector in Bucharest , the capital of Romania .

history

The first documentary mention of the hill on which the Palace of the Chamber of Deputies was built dates back to 1650. At that time, wine was grown on the hill for the monks of the then existing Patriarchal Cathedral of Bucharest . The entrance gate in the Brâncoveanu style has been preserved from the 17th century . The Palace of the Chamber of Deputies was not built there until around 1700.

In 1881 the old building was repaired and refurbished. Now it even had an amphitheater . The amphitheater was large, cozy, spacious and had two rows of seats and a gallery. The members held their meetings in the conference room, a room with chairs in a semicircle, a stage and the "Bank of Ministers". The building has also been opened to the public for viewing outside of meetings.

The palace was given its current form in 1907 by the architect Dimitrie Maimarolu . During the socialist era , the building served as the seat of the National Assembly , the supreme body of state power in the Socialist Republic of Romania . After the revolution of 1989 it became the seat of the House of Representatives again. In 1997 the Romanian Patriarchate acquired the palace.

description

The 80 meter long facade of the building is designed in a neoclassical style. The central entrance is dominated by a portico with six Ionic columns , four of which are arranged in groups of two. The side facade in the northeast is symmetrical, and the well-designed architecture gives it an impressive shape. The four levels of the building can only be seen from United Nations Street.
