Patricia Albjerg Graham

Patricia Albjerg Graham (born February 9, 1935 in Lafayette , Indiana ) is an American science historian at Harvard University . She is best known for her work on the history of education and her commitment to educating disadvantaged minorities.

Graham received a bachelor's degree in English from Purdue University in 1955 and a master 's degree there in 1957, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1964. in pedagogical history. From 1955 she was a teacher at various high schools in Virginia and New York City , from 1965 she was director of education at Barnard College in New York City. In 1974, Graham received a professorship at Harvard University and became vice president of Radcliffe College . Previous academic stations were Indiana University Bloomington (1965/1966), Northern Michigan University (visiting professor 1972) and Columbia University (1965–1974). In 2006 she retired .

From 1977 to 1979 Graham was director of the National Institute of Education (appointed by US President Jimmy Carter ), from 1985 to 1989 President of the National Academy of Education , from 1982 to 1991 as the first female dean of a Harvard faculty, namely the Harvard Graduate School of Education . From 1991 to 2000 she was President of the Spencer Foundation , a non-profit foundation that promotes educational research.

In 1972 Graham received a Guggenheim Fellowship . In 1988 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1999 to the American Philosophical Society . Graham holds 17 honorary doctorates from various universities and colleges, including one from Harvard University (2015) and one from Central European University (2016).

She has been married to the science historian Loren Graham (* 1933) since 1955 , the couple has a daughter.
