Patricia Hill Collins (born May 1, 1948 in Philadelphia ) is an American sociologist . She held the 100th presidency of the American Sociological Association and researches and publishes mainly on the social status of African American women. Your book "Black Feminist Thought" is considered a standard work. Hill Collins is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park .

Career

The daughter of a factory worker and secretary received her bachelor's degree from Brandeis University in 1969 and her master's degree from Harvard University in 1970 . She then worked as a public school teacher and received her PhD in sociology from Brandeis University in 1984 .

Collins became Professor of African American Studies at the University of Cincinnati in 1993 and full Professor of Sociology there in 1996. Since her retirement in 2005 she has taught as a professor at the University of Maryland .

In 2008, she became the first African American woman to serve as president of the American Sociological Association.
