Patricius (usurper)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patricius ( Hebrew נטרונא - Natrona ; † 351 or 352) was a leader of Jewish rebels against the Roman emperor Constantius II in 351/352.

With the rebellion, the Jews did not primarily defend themselves against the strictly Christian- Arian religious policy, but against the corrupt, oppressive regime of Constantius Gallus , the imperial deputy residing in Antioch on the Orontes . In Sepphoris (Diocaesarea) the rebels attacked and disarmed the Roman garrison, proclaimed Patricius "King" and spread the revolt from Galilee to several other cities in Palestine . Acts of violence against Christians are not recorded. Gallus sent troops under the command of Ursicinus , who quickly and brutally suppressed the movement. The cities of Sepphoris, Tiberias and Diospolis were destroyed. A midrash suggests that Patricius was killed in the decisive battle that may have taken place at Acre .
