Patrick Gérard (born July 1961 in Dijon ) is a French mathematician who studies partial differential equations. He is a professor at the University of Paris-South, where he is director of the mathematics department in 2011.

Gérard studied 1981 to 1985 at the École normal supérieure (Paris) (Rue d'Ulm, ENS) with the DEA at the University of Paris VII in 1982 and the Agrégation in 1983. He received his doctorate in 1985 under Serge Alinhac at the University of Paris-South (dissertation : Distributions conormales analytiques et EDP non linéaires ) and completed his habilitation in 1991. From 1985 he was assistant professor at the ENS before he became professor at the University of Paris-Süd in Orsay in 1991 . From 1993 to 2005 he was also a part-time professor at the École Polytechnique .

In 1995 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 2009 to 2014 he was a senior member at the Institut Universitaire de France.

In 1998 he received the Prix Servant for his work on smoothing in micro-local analysis . Independently of Luc Tartar, he introduced H-Measures in the homogenization of partial differential equations, which he called Microlocal Defect Measures . In 2014 he received the Grand Prix Leonid Franc of the Académie des Sciences.

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2006 in Madrid ( Nonlinear Schrödinger equations in inhomogeneous media: wellposedness and illposedness of the Cauchy problem ) and in 2004 at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm.

He was a member of Bourbaki .
