Patrick Kerwin

Patrick Kerwin , PC (born October 25, 1889 in Sarnia , Ontario - † February 2, 1963 ) was a Canadian judge . He was a member of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1935 until his death and was its Chairman ( Chief Justice ) from 1954 .

biography

Kerwin received his education at the Sarnia Collegiate Institute, then he studied law at the Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto . At first he was an intern in his native Sarnia. When he was admitted to the bar in 1911, he moved to Guelph and worked for the Guthrie & Guthrie law firm for 21 years . During that time he also served as a solicitor for the City of Guelph and Wellington Counties and a district attorney. From 1932 he was a judge at the Ontario Supreme Court .

Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett appointed Kerwin to the Supreme Court Justice of Canada on July 20, 1935 . On July 1, 1954, he was promoted to Chief Justice by Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent . Kerwin remained in office until his death.
