Antonio Lamer

Joseph Antonio Charles Lamer , PC , CC (born July 8, 1933 in Montreal , † November 24, 2007 in Ottawa ; mainly called Antonio Lamer ) was a Canadian judge and legal scholar . He was a member of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1980 to 2000 and was its Chairman ( Chief Justice ) from 1990 .

biography

Lamer served in the Canadian Army for several years, from 1950 to 1954 in the artillery, then until 1960 in the military administration. During this time he studied law at the University of Montreal . He was admitted to the bar in 1957 and practiced with the law firm Cutler, Lamer, Bellemare and Associates . He was also a professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Montreal, specializing in criminology .

From 1969 Lamer belonged to the Supreme Court of Québec, from 1978 to the Court of Appeal of this province. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed him Justice to the Supreme Court of Canada on March 28, 1980 . On July 1, 1990, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was appointed Chief Justice . Lamer held this office until January 6, 2000. After his resignation, he joined the law firm Stikeman Elliott in Toronto as a consultant .
