biography

Taschereau came from one of the most influential families in the province of Québec. His father, Pierre-Elzéar, was a member of the provincial parliament, his cousin Elzéar-Alexandre was Archbishop of Québec , and his cousin Jean-Thomas was Chief Justice. His grandson Robert later became Chairman of the Supreme Court, Jean-Thomas' son Louis-Alexandre Prime Minister of Québec.

Taschereau received his education at the Petit Séminaire de Québec and then studied law at the Université Laval . In 1857 he was admitted to the bar. In line with family tradition, he was politically active and was elected in 1861 as a representative of the conservatives in the parliament of what was then Canada . He initially supported the Canadian Confederation proposed by John Macdonald and George-Étienne Cartier , but then changed his mind before the decisive vote, whereupon he was defeated in his constituency in 1867.

In 1871 Taschereau was appointed to the Court of Justice of the Province of Québec, and in 1873 he published an annotated summary of Canadian criminal law. On October 7, 1878, he was appointed judge at the Supreme Court of Canada , where he replaced his cousin Jean-Thomas. In addition, he taught at the University of Ottawa when there was no session . On August 14, 1902, he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). After the appointment by Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier , Taschereau took over the post of Chief Justice on November 21, 1902 as the first French Canadier ever . He exercised this until May 2, 1906.
