Sverre Patursson
Sverre Patursson , in today's Faroese also Sverri , (born September 22, 1871 in Kirkjubøur , Faroe Islands , † November 10, 1960 ibid) was a Faroese writer . He is considered the country's first prose author and dedicated himself particularly to ornithology .
Life
Sverre was born in 1871 on the famous royal farm in Kirkjubøur as the son of Poul Peder Pedersen (also called Páll Patursson, 1836-1893) and his wife Ellen Cathrine Djonesdatter (also called Elin Dalsgarð, 1840-1934). Like him, his older siblings Súsanna Helena and Jóannes were to become important personalities in the country.
After training in Denmark and Norway , he founded the Faroe Islands' first youth association , Sólarmagn , in 1895 . From 1898 to 1902 he published his own magazine, Fuglaframi . There he stood up as a specialist author in an outstanding way for the endangered Faroese bird world , for which he is still revered today. It is not least thanks to him that the annual arrival of the oyster fisherman ( Tjaldur ) on March 12th as Grækarismessa was established as a holiday. In January 1911 he married Agnes Lindemann in Kirkjubøur and then worked from 1911 to 1912 as an editor at Tingakrossur , the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin's party newspaper . Furthermore, Sverre Patursson translated Robinson Crusoe into Faroese in 1914 (last reprinted in 1990). In the rest of his life he traveled a lot and stayed for long periods in Norway, Sweden and Germany. He mainly worked as a journalist , his articles were also printed outside the Faroe Islands.
Of his short stories, "Íslandsferðin" (The trip to Iceland) and "Ábal" are probably the best known.
