A timpani doctor (especially Bader in Austria ) takes care of the medical care of the timpani during and after a mensur .

tasks

Since in academic fencing - unlike in sport fencing - sharp weapons are used, bleeding injuries in the head area are in most cases not considered accidents but as regular hits, even if they do not occur with every measure. Therefore the presence of at least one doctor - depending on the comment - is required during the mensur. The drum doctor does not need to be a member of a student union . From Tübingen Senior Convent of Paukarzt received Dr. Kraus at the end of the 1880s around 600 marks per day .

After every officially determined hit, the timpani doctor examines the timpani edge hit to decide whether the game can be continued. The drum doctor can cancel each game at any time for medical reasons (“medical removal ”). There is a certain parallel here to the ring doctor in boxing , who is allowed to examine the boxers for incapacity to fight and can order that the fight be stopped.

After the game the Paukarzt the "mending" scars of the injured Paukanten in a side room of the Pauklokals . The surgical utensils are in place.

Friedrich Immisch (1826-1892), an unfinished medical student and old man of the Corps Guestphalia Jena, is considered the most important drum doctor . Between 1849 and 1885 he was in charge of over 12,000 scales at the Heidelberg Seniors' Convents and the Heidelberg fraternities . He introduced some innovations in the treatment of scaling injuries. His most important contribution is the eyeglasses to protect the eyes, nose and ears. It is in use everywhere today.

Tamme Goecke and Patrick von Samson-Himmelstjerna organized the first drum physicians' congress. On March 2nd and 3rd, 2007, it took place in the corp house of the Palatia Guestphalia in Freiburg.
