The Paul Arnsberg Monument in Frankfurt am Main is dedicated to the Frankfurt lawyer , publicist and historian Paul Arnsberg . The stele was designed by the sculptor Clemens M. Strugalla and erected in May 2011 on Paul-Arnsberg-Platz, which was redesigned the year before, in the Ostend district .

execution

Portrait with a dedication on one side of the memorial stele

The memorial stele, designed as a straight and mostly smooth triangular column, was made of stainless steel . A little below its upper edge, it is provided with a circumferential relief band, which, in addition to engraved stylized motifs, bears a portrait of Arnsberg and an inscription. The motifs are intended to symbolize Jewish festivals and represent the Jewish life that had shaped this district up until the beginning of the Holocaust .

The text incorporated next to the portrait reads:

“Paul Arnsberg (1899 - 1978) came from a Jewish merchant family in Frankfurt and grew up in Ostend. After the National Socialists came to power, the lawyer and publicist had to flee to Palestine in 1933.

In 1958 he returned to Frankfurt and supported the reconstruction of the local Jewish community. He devoted himself to the historical research of Judaism in Hesse and Frankfurt, a world that was destroyed by the National Socialists.

After Paul Arnsberg's death, his widow Rosl Arnsberg (1908-2010) continued his documentary work in order to preserve the memory of Jewish life in Frankfurt am Main. "

realization

The erection of the memorial stele was suggested and partly financed by the local advisory committee 4. The project was supported by the Henry and Emma Budge Foundation , the Jewish community of Frankfurt , the Jewish Museum Frankfurt am Main , the Institute for City History and the city's cultural office.
