Paul Adolphe Kauffmann
Paul Adolphe Kauffmann (born July 8, 1849 in Belfort , † February 20, 1940 in Grimault ) was a French painter , etcher and illustrator .
Life and works
Paul Adolphe Kauffmann was a son of Jean-Pierre Kauffmann and his wife Madeleine Clara, geb. Sentupery. His older brother, who was also called Paul Adolphe, had died again at the time of his birth; his sister Emma Joséphine lived from 1845 to 1831.
Paul Adolphe Kauffmann did not receive any regular training as a painter or graphic artist. As an autodidact, he drew for Monde Illustré and other magazines from 1869 ; he also illustrated books. In 1879 he married Louise Marie Adèle Baudry in Paris , with whom he had two daughters.
Kauffmann, who temporarily lived in Viroflay , fought in the Franco-German War and later visited various theaters of war as a draftsman and reporter.
Often his works were thematically linked to his Alsatian homeland: Together with other artists such as Hansi , Charles Spindler and Henri Loux, he shaped an idea of Alsace that was popular in France from the beginning of the 20th century: Cette vision d ' Une Alsace idyllique se fixe dans l'imaginaire collectif français et aboutit aux fameux “cinq C” décrit par Georges Bischoff: coiffe, choucroute, colombages, cigogne et cathédrale , wrote Jérôme Schweitzer.
Kauffmann drew, among others, for the Bibliothèque illustrée by Marpon and Flammarion. He created caricatures for Monsieur le Uhlan , numerous drawings and etchings were published in the Journal d'un Officier malgré lui and Kauffmann's vignettes adorn the Histoire versifiée et humoristique de la France by Victor Thiéry .
In 1908 he showed several watercolors at a miniature exhibition, and in 1909 the work Our Last Flags in Alsace . In 1914 his work Les Noces Alsaciennes came out, which contains 20 plates after Kauffmann's watercolors, in 1918 Nos petits Alsaciens chez eux .
