Life

Bender entered the Royal Art Academy in Düsseldorf in 1878 , where he studied with Hugo Crola , Heinrich Lauenstein (elementary class and classroom of antiquities) and Johann Peter Theodor Janssen (classroom of classics B and natural class) and from 1881 to 1884 with Eduard von Gebhardt and Julius Roeting (painting classes) Studied portrait and genre painting. In 1898 and 1899 he was also listed as a member of the “Malkasten” artists' association . He then worked - largely as a portrait painter and illustrator - in Munich and finally in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Bender was close to Mathilde Ludendorff and her “philosophy” as well as the writer and publishing director of Ludendorff Verlag, Karl von Unruh (1884–1969). Both spoke on the occasion of the cremation of "our colleague and fellow combatant" (von Unruh). On this occasion, reference was made to some of Bender's works, the portraits of Prince Otto von Bismarck and Martin Luther after his death mask, a portrait of General Erich Ludendorff (1835) and a portrait of Mathilde Ludendorff .
