Paul Emsley (born August 25, 1947 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish artist .

Emsley grew up in South Africa and only moved to the UK in 1996 .

In 2012 he was commissioned to paint the official portrait of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge , which he completed in three and a half months. It met with some criticism during and after its opening. The writer Hilary Mantel thinks, for example, that the duchess's gaze is “dead,” she also wears the strained smile of a woman who would actually like to tell the painter that he should give the devil ( “her eyes are dead and she wears the strained smile of a woman who really wants to tell the painter to bugger off " ).
