Paul Eugène Gorge: De visser

Paul Eugène Gorge (born March 23, 1856 in Antwerp , † November 14, 1941 in Berchem (Antwerp) ) was a Belgian painter.

Life

Gorge was trained at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen . He painted genre pictures , interiors and landscapes . Shortly after its founding in 1883, Gorge became a member and treasurer of the Flemish artists' association Als ik Kan , whose members, with the exception of Henry van de Velde , could only gain local significance in their traditional painting style. Painters such as Emile Claus , James Ensor and George Minne in the Kunst van Heden group founded in 1905 set themselves apart from this. Gorge stayed in Antwerp throughout his life. He took part in a few exhibitions around the turn of the century and is only rarely present in museums and on the art market.

The German painter Lovis Corinth went to Antwerp to study at the art academy in 1884 and was welcomed in Gorge's studio and household. Gorge also introduced him to Antwerp artists, but Corinth quickly got bored and moved on to Paris after only three months. The friendship with Gorge remained, and Corinth later portrayed Gorge several times.
