Paul Franz
Paul Franz , actually François Gauthier (born November 30, 1876 in Paris , † April 20, 1950 in Paris) was a French opera singer ( heroic tenor ). During his stage career from 1908 to 1937, he was considered one of the great Wagner singers of his time.
Life
His Wagner roles included Lohengrin , Tannhäuser , Parsifal , Walther von Stolzing ( Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ), Siegmund ( Die Walküre ), Siegfried ( Siegfried and Götterdämmerung ) and Tristan ( Tristan and Isolde ). He also sang tenor roles in the French and Italian repertoire.
Franz belonged to the ensemble of the Paris Opera for decades . Guest performances have taken him to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden , La Scala and the Teatro Colón . A planned appearance at the Bayreuth Festival did not materialize because of the First World War.
After retiring from the stage, he was a professor at the Paris Conservatory . He was also a composer and translator of German song texts.
Franz was married to the singer and singing teacher Marguerite Monsy .
