Paul Griffin (born June 3, 1971 in Dublin ) is a retired Irish boxer .

Career

The southpaw began boxing in 1982 in the Dublin suburb of Drimnagh. He won twelve Irish championships in his age and weight classes during his career, including the adult title from 1991 to 1994. In 1991 he won the gold medal in featherweight at the European Championships in Gothenburg and was voted the best boxer of all weight classes. His European title win was also the only one by an Irish boxer between 1949 and 2010. He was then led to number 5 in the world rankings. At the European Championships in 1993 in Bursa , he won a bronze medal in the featherweight division, after having left the semifinals without a fight due to injury.

He also represented Ireland at the 1992 Olympic Games (round of 16), as well as at the 1991 World Championships (quarter-finals) and 1993 (round of 16). At the 1994 World Challenge, he won a notable draw against three-time European and two-time world champions Serafim Todorow .

From 1995 to 2011 he played 30 professional fights with 25 wins and five losses, where he was under contract with Frank Warren , among others . In the year of his retirement, he was recognized for his sporting achievements by the Irish Amateur Boxing Council . He then worked as a boxing trainer.
