Paul Gropius

Paul Gropius (born September 1, 1821 in Berlin ; † March 1, 1888 there ) was a German painter.

Life

Gropius was the son of the painter Karl Wilhelm Gropius , from whom he also received his first artistic lessons.

Gropius made several extensive study trips through France, Italy and Switzerland and returned to his hometown in 1841. In the same year he worked in his father's studio. When Karl Wilhelm Gropius retired in 1868, Paul Gropius was entrusted as his successor with the management of decorative painting at the royal theater. Gropius ran a stone cardboard factory in which he made ornaments and interior decorations, for example in 1843 for the opera house damaged by fire . Here were among other statuettes and reliefs designed by Christian Daniel Rauch and Christian Friedrich Tieckmanufactured. He published under the name Ornaments in various architectural styles based on models which were made in the factory of all kinds of ornaments in stone cardboard by Carl Gropius in Berlin ... together with his father a series of sample books with six illustrated sheets each, which appeared in an anthology in 1857.
