Paul Hickson

Paul Hickson (* 1950 ) is a British-Canadian astronomer .

Paul Hickson earned his degree (Bachelor of Science) in 1971 and received his Ph.D. in 1976 ( Ph.D. ) at the California Institute of Technology . He became research assistant (NSERC University Research Fellow ) in 1980 , assistant professor in 1984, associate professor in 1988 and has been professor of physics and astronomy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada) since 1996 .

In 1982 Hickson published a list of 100 small and relatively isolated groups of galaxies, which are now called Hickson Compact Groups . The members of this list are indicated with HCG plus a serial number, for example HCG 23 . He works in extragalactic astronomy and in the development of astronomical instruments .

Hickson has been a member of the Royal Astronomical Society since 1998 .
