From the late 1840s, there is evidence that he emerged as a strong chess player in the Parisian Café de la Régence . In the 1850s he was already one of the strongest masters in France. He played several matches in Paris against leading chess masters of his time: in 1858 he lost a match against the American Paul Morphy , who visited Paris during his European tour, with 0:12; in 1859 Journoud was defeated by the top French player Jules Arnous de Rivière with 5:10 (+4, -9 = 2); in 1860 he lost against the Prussian Adolf Anderssen with 1½: 3½ (+1, -3, = 1). His highest historical rating was 2468 in October 1861.

Journoud also made a name for himself as a publicist for French chess magazines. He edited “La Régence” in 1861, “La Nouvelle Régence” from 1861 to 1864, “Le Palamède Français” in 1864 and “Le Sphinx” from 1865–1867. In addition, from 1861 until his death in 1882 he headed the chess column of the renowned Le Monde illustré magazine .
