from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Frederick Linden (born January 29, 1947 ) is a British mathematician and fluid mechanic.

Life

Paul Linden studied at the University of Cambridge and received his doctorate in 1972 with a thesis in the field of fluid mechanics The Effect of Turbulence and Shear on Salt Fingers . He was then a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge until 1976 . From 1976 to 1998 he held various positions at this university. In 1998 he moved to the University of California in San Diego , where he was Blasker Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering until 2010. He has been professor emeritus there since 2010 . In the same year he returned to the University of Cambridge, where he has been Director of Research at DAMTP since 2014.

Linden is internationally recognized for his theoretical and experimental work on fluid dynamics , especially for his introduction of innovative concepts for understanding complex phenomena in meteorology and oceanography (climate change) as well as for his contributions in the fields of environmental research and the application of fluid mechanics methods in industry, see above in construction. For example, his research group examines the flow conditions in low-energy houses .

In 1982 he became a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society . In 2007 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 2013 the Academia Europaea accepted him as a full member. In 2003 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
