description

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium pringlei is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 45 centimeters, sometimes even more. The stems are mostly covered with fine and coarse to woolly 0.5 to 0.8 cm long hair, but occasionally almost bare and have a rough and star-shaped hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are two to eight or more basal leaves , while there are none or up to three or more leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is about spatulate at a length of 3.5 to 20 cm and a width of 1-4 centimeters elliptical-oblanceolate and lanceolate to lanceolate-linear with more or less wedge-shaped Spreitenbasis and obtuse to acute Spreitenspitze. The spreading margins are mostly whole, but rarely also serrated. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf are covered with fine and coarse to woolly 0.1 to 0.3 cm long hairs on the upper leaves, while the lower leaves are usually more or less bare.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period includes the months of July and August. The umbrella-like total inflorescence usually contains 3 to 20 or more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence shaft is covered with star-shaped as well as glandular and stalked hair. With a size of 0.7 to 0.9 centimeters, the bell-shaped involucre contains 12 to 15, occasionally more on the underside glandular or star-shaped hairy bracts with rounded or pointed tips. The flower heads contain 12 to 15 or more ray florets. The yellow ray florets are 0.7 to 0.9 centimeters long.

The achenes are columnar with a length of 0.22 to 0.4 centimeters. The pappus consists of 40 to 80 white or straw-colored bristle hairs, which are 0.4 to 0.5 centimeters long.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium pringlei is in southern North America and Central America . It stretches from Arizona and New Mexico in the north over Mexico to Guatemala in the south.

Hieracium pringlei thrives at altitudes of 2000 to 3000 meters in pure pine and oak forests as well as in mixed oak and pine forests.
