Paul McGuinness (born June 16, 1951 in Rinteln near Hanover ) is the founder and was the main owner of the music management company Principle Management Limited , based in Dublin , Ireland , and shortly after U2 was founded, he was the first manager of the Irish band until he split up Retired from this task in 2013 after a total of 34 years. He also represents bands such as PJ Harvey , Art of Noise , Paddy Casey , Mytownband and also represented The Rapture until their dissolution in 2014 .

Family, youth and studies

McGuinness is the eldest son of Philip and Sheila McGuinness. He was born in Germany because his father was stationed there as a member of the Royal Air Force . He grew up in Thorney Island , West Sussex and later in Cosoford near Wolverhampton before the family moved to Malta .

After another stint in Poole, England, McGuinness attended Clongowes College in Kildare , Ireland. He later studied philosophy and psychology at Trinity College in Dublin. Here he met Michael Deeny , who later became the manager of Chris de Burgh , and Kathy Gilfillan, his future wife. McGuinness was banned from college for her third year. After stays in London and France, he returned to Trinity College. He did not graduate there, however, as he got a job as a unit manager at a film production company.

Professional

In his early career, McGuinness worked, among other things, as a unit manager on the film " Zardoz " with Sean Connery , which appeared in 1974. He also managed a folk rock group called Spud and helped them get their first record deal.

He was introduced to the musicians of U2 in May 1978 by their discoverer, the journalist Bill Graham , and became their manager. As the “fifth band member” he receives 1/5 of the band's income.

McGuinness founded Principle Management in 1984. He chose this name because he wanted to have a stronger leadership than usual in management (principle, English = principle, order principle). In the late 1980s he founded a book publisher in the music division McGuinness / Whelan Publishing , as well as the record label Celtic Heartbeat, together with Bill Whelan .

In November 2013, McGuinness sold Principle Management to Live Nation , U2's longtime tour partner, and stepped down from the band's management. On his recommendation, Madonna's long-time manager Guy Oseary became the new representative of the band, who at the same time as McGuinness sold his management company Maverick to Live Nation, but at that time had already been taking care of the day-to-day business of U2 for several months. McGuinness remained Chairman of Principle and continues to oversee his other management artists.

U2 honored their relationship with and the importance of McGuinness on the 2014 album Songs Of Innocence with the following words:

"This album is dedicated to Paul McGuinness who was, and always will be, there for us."

"This album is dedicated to Paul McGuinness, who was always there for us and always will be for us."

McGuinness still lives in the Irish capital, from which he and U2 were made an honorary citizen in 2000.
