Paul Pachner (* 1871 in Marburg an der Drau ; † October 13, 1937 in Graz ) was an Austrian naval officer and commander of the small cruiser Zenta .

Battle of Castellastua

On August 13, 1914, Paul Pachner took over command of SMS Zenta with the rank of frigate captain . On August 16, Zenta and the destroyer Ulan were used to blockade Antivari on the coast of Montenegro . There they were attacked by a Franco-British naval association, which consisted of at least 14 ships. The faster Ulan escaped back to Cattaro , but the Zenta went down in the fight. According to Pachner's report, the torpedo firing, which had been ordered before leaving the ship, could apparently no longer be carried out. Pachner was, as he said, the last to leave the sinking ship. However, when he noticed that there were still members of the crew on the quarterdeck, he swam back and did not leave the ship until everyone else had jumped off board. Pachner and the survivors were captured by the Montenegrin prisoners until they were liberated by Austro-Hungarian troops in 1916.

Pachner was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class , for guiding the ship Zenta .
