Paul Rhode (politician)

Paul Rhode (born April 22, 1877 in Höxter , † January 4, 1965 in Recklinghausen ) was a teacher and politician of the SPD .

Rhode attended a teacher training college since 1891 and took the first teacher examination in 1897. He then worked as a teacher, later as a main teacher in Ochtrup , Epe , Herten , Ibbenbüren , Rheine , Bocholt and most recently from 1910 to 1933 in Recklinghausen.

He had been a member of the SPD since 1918 and was active in local, cultural and school politics for the party. Among other things, Rhode was a community and official representative from 1919 to 1933 and a city councilor in Recklinghausen from 1926 to 1933, as well as an honorary city councilor. He was also chairman of the workers' welfare for the Recklinghausen subdistrict.

After the beginning of National Socialist rule , Rhode was dismissed from school for political reasons and arrested. At first he was imprisoned in Herford , later he was sent to the Esterwegen and Lichtenberg-Prettin concentration camps . He was arrested again in 1944 as part of the Grid Action .

After 1945 Rhode was chairman of the SPD subdistrict Recklinghausen and chairman of the party's culture committee. In 1946 he was a member of the Provincial Council of Westphalia and in 1946 and 1947 of the appointed Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia . In the first electoral term, Rhode was then directly elected member of the state parliament for the constituency of Recklinghausen-Stadt.
