Paul Roazen (born August 14, 1936 in Boston , † November 3, 2005 ) was a political scientist who became an important historian of psychoanalysis .

Life

Roazen studied at Harvard University and in Chicago and Oxford before returning to Harvard. He wrote his dissertation on Freud's political thinking. In 1971 he moved to York University in Toronto, where he taught until 1995.

In 1965 Roazen began interviewing surviving friends, relatives, colleagues, and patients of Freud. His first major book, Freud and his followers, was based on hundreds of hours of interview material. That was an original approach back then. Although also had Kurt Eissler out in the fifties interviews with pioneers of psychoanalysis, but Eissler published his interviews (with the exception of an interview with Wilhelm Reich not).

Roazen was the first non-psychoanalyst to be granted access to the archives of the British Psychoanalytical Institute by Anna Freud . There he could see all the papers that Ernest Jones had used for his semi-official Freud biography.
