Paul Rolland (born November 11, 1911 in Budapest , † November 9, 1978 in Urbana , Illinois ) was an American violist and music teacher of Hungarian origin.

Life

Rolland studied violin at Simpson College in Indianola (Iowa) (Bachelor) and at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest (Master of Music, 1937). From 1935 to 1938 he was first violist with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. With the Pro Ideale Quartet , which he founded , he traveled to the USA in 1938, where it was based at the Westminster Choir College in Princetown. In 1940, Rolland received American citizenship.

From 1945 until his death in 1978 Rolland taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , with a particular interest in group lessons in string classes . He first founded Saturday classes for strings, later the Illinois Summer Youth Music Program , from which the University of Illinois String Research Project emerged . In 1946 he was one of the founders of the American string teachers organization ASTA , of which he was president from 1964 to 1966. From 1950 to 1960 he was editor of the magazine American String Teacher , from 1966 to 1974 responsible for the publications of the ASTA. He was u. a. awarded the ASTA Distinguished Service Award (1973) and the bronze medal of the Ysaye Foundation (1975).
