Paul Nahman Shulman ( Hebrew פול נחמן שולמן, Schaul Ben-Tzvi ; * 1922 in Connecticut ; †  May 16, 1994 in Haifa ) was the 2nd Commander in Chief of the Israeli Navy in 1949 .

Life

Shulman was born in Connecticut, USA, in 1922 and grew up in New York. He later graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis . During the Second World War he fought on the Pacific Front ; after the surrender of Japan in 1945 he retired from the service of the US Navy. After the war and the Holocaust , he helped smuggle Jews from Europe into the British Mandate of Palestine . In 1948 he emigrated to the then proclaimed State of Israel .

In November of the same year, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion asked him to help create an Israeli navy. During the Palestine War in 1948 he was in command of the blockade of the Gaza Strip and the capture of En Gedi on the Dead Sea . In 1949 he became second in command of the Navy after his predecessor Gershon Zak decided to return to teaching. However, he resigned from the fleet service in 1949 and became an advisor to Ben-Gurion for questions about the Navy.
