Paul Siebertz (born May 10, 1915 in Aachen , † April 21, 1997 in Monschau ) was a German landscape painter .

Life and education

Siebertz attended the then Aachen School of Applied Arts and decided to study landscape painting, but was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was stationed with an aircraft defense department in Vienna. An understanding manager made it possible for him to pursue his studies during the day. At the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in Vienna he was accepted into the master class of Carl Fahringer and completed an academic course during the Second World War . In 1942 he married Rosl Siebertz, née Mikula.

After the war Siebertz lived in Vienna and participated in several exhibitions. Finally he moved back to his home in Menzerath near Monschau . Now he began his productive activity as a landscape painter of the Eifel and the High Fens .

The resulting pictures, mainly oil paintings, charcoal and pencil drawings, were never created in the studio , but always outside, so to speak, directly in front of the motif. From this a spontaneous, sometimes rough, impasto style of painting developed, which did not seem dissimilar to the style of the German impressionists he valued, such as Lovis Corinth , Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt . However, the rural, partly still very unspoilt landscape of the northern Eifel and the High Fens was artistically as good as undeveloped. Eifel painters like Fritz von Wille had mainly moved into quarters in the South Eifel.

Especially in the years 1950 to 1975 Paul Siebertz succeeded in creating unique character studies of the so special and at the same time inaccessible landscape of the High Fens.

In addition to his landscape paintings, he also created portraits and occasional designs for church windows.

As a teacher he worked at the city. Realschule in Monschau and the then special school for the learning disabled in Simmerath. He was also involved as a lecturer at the local adult education center.
