Paul Smalian

Paul Smalian (born June 2, 1901 in Neuruppin , † November 1, 1974 in Steinhude ) was a German painter .

Live and act

He studied at the State Art School in Berlin until he graduated in 1925. In 1927 he traveled to Egypt for five years, where he captured the seemingly exotic impressions of the country and its people in numerous pictures and drawings. The cosmopolitan artist made further trips to Italy, Brazil, Tunisia, Morocco, West Africa, Ceylon, Thailand, Spain, France and Switzerland. In 1945 Smalian moved to Gehrden, where he worked as an art teacher at the grammar school there until 1960. In 1948 the painter finally settled at the Steinhuder Meer , whose charming surroundings kept inspiring him artistically throughout his life.

On the island of Itaparica , off Bahia, there is even a Paul Smalian Street.

Many of his works are in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture and some were bought by the State Gallery of the City of Dessau . Paul Smalian died on November 1st, 1974 after a long and painful illness.
