Paul Tanner

Paul OW Tanner (born October 15, 1917 in Skunk Hollow , Kentucky , † February 5, 2013 in Carlsbad , California ) was an American swing jazz trombonist, jazz writer and inventor.

Career

Tanner became known as the trombonist of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. From 1942 he played in Miller's Army Air Force Band and later in the successor band under Tex Beneke . After the end of the big band era, he became a studio musician in Hollywood at ABC , where he worked a lot with Henry Mancini (a former colleague from Tex Benekes' band). After completing his studies, he was a music professor at UCLA , where he gave jazz courses. He also wrote several books on jazz, among others. a. a school textbook and textbooks for trombone.

Together with Bob Whitsell (inventor and actor) he invented the electro-theremin (also called tannerin ) in the late 1950s, which was supposed to imitate the sound of the theremin . For example, it was used by the Beach Boys in songs like " Good Vibrations ". Tanner used it for several TV and feature film soundtracks and for the record "Music from Outer Space" (Omega).
