Paul d'Ivoi

Paul d'Ivoi (actually Paul Charles Philippe Eric Deleutre ; born October 25, 1856 in Paris ; † September 6, 1915 there ) was a French writer .

Life

Paul d'Ivoi is a grandson of the well-known journalist Edouard Deleutre and son of Charles Deleutre , who was also a journalist. Both already used the pseudonym "d'Ivoi".

After studying in Versailles and Paris, he worked as a journalist for the Paris Journal and Figaro and wrote literary reviews for the Globe . Impressed by adventurous stories early on, he began to write them himself. His first novels were only moderately successful and are now almost forgotten. In 1894 he achieved his breakthrough with the novel Les Cinq Sous de Lavarède , which appeared in Le petit journal . The novel, stylistically based on Jules Verne , formed the prelude to a series of novels that grew to 21 volumes and became known under the title Les Voyages Excentriques .

Among the French successors of Jules Verne, his books were the most commercially successful and openly competed with his Voyages extraordinaires . In contrast to Verne's works, Paul d'Ivoi's novels are more adventure-oriented and more closely related. Many of the heroes appear in multiple works.

The character of Docteur Mystère , created by him , is also very popular as a comic series in Italy.

His works quickly became known outside of France as well. In Germany, only four of his works have appeared in slightly abridged versions to date.
