Paul van Herck (born May 19, 1938 in Berchem , Antwerp ; died June 19, 1989 ) was a Belgian science fiction writer.

Life

Van Herck worked as a teacher in Antwerp, where he taught Dutch and French. He started out as a writer of SF radio plays. In 1965 De Cirkels en Other Fantastische Verhalen , a collection of short stories, appeared, and in 1968 the grotesque satirical novel Sam, of de Pluterdag , which was also translated into German under the title Framstag Sam . Sam received the European Science Fiction Society Award for best Belgian novel in 1972. In the Dutch-speaking area, however, van Herck was less successful, so his second novel Caroline, Oh Caroline (1976) was only published in French.
