Baron Paul von Nicolay (born June 17, 1777 in Saint Petersburg , † April 28, 1866 on the Monrepos estate near Vyborg ) was the Russian ambassador in London , Copenhagen and Stockholm .

Paul von Nicolay was the only son of Ludwig Heinrich von Nicolay and his wife Johanna Margarethe Poggenpohl and was given the same name in honor of Tsar Paul .

Paul von Nicolay became a Russian State Councilor and worked as the tsarist ambassador in London , Copenhagen and Stockholm . He was ennobled in 1829 as a baron by the then Grand Duchy of Finland .

Paul von Nicolay took leave of the Russian services in 1847 and devoted himself entirely to his Monrepos estate. He died there on April 28, 1866 at the age of 88.

Paul von Nicolay married the Princess de Broglie (1787–1824) daughter of Auguste Joseph de Broglie-Revel (1762–1795) and Françoise de La Brousse de distribution (1760–1855) in 1811 . With her he had five children:

  • Maria (* 1812) ⚭ Peter Hermann von Baranoff (1799–1871)
  • Alexandrine Catherine Henriette (1814–1886) ⚭ 1844 Adrien Gabriel Gaudin de Villaine (grandmother of Renée Elton Maud),
  • Nicolaus Armand Mikael (1818–1869), in the service of the Russian Foreign Ministry ⚭ Zofia von Meyendorff (1835–1910)
  • Louis Ernst (1820-1891), he gave up a brilliant military career at the age of 48 and went to the monastery of La Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble
  • Alexander (1822–1899), held high offices in Russia
