Paula Häiväoja

Paula Häiväoja (born Paula Virtanen on December 9, 1929 in Kouvola ; died on March 12, 2011 in Vantaa ) was a Finnish jewelry and fashion designer .

Paula Häiväoja completed her training as a fashion designer at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki from 1953 . In the 1950s she taught a class at the Helsinki Art and Design College .

Häiväoja first took part in an exhibition at Expo 58 in Brussels in 1958 . In the decades that followed, her designs were shown at numerous art exhibitions as an example of modern Finnish jewelry design.

From 1956 to 1967 she worked as a jewelry designer for the Finnish jewelry manufacturer Kalevala Koru . In 1963 she was hired as the first female chief designer.

In 1967 Paula Häiväoja Kalevala Koru left to work as a freelance designer and to open Studio Paulan on the Aleksanterinkatu shopping street in Helsinki .

Häiväoja's works are characterized by pronounced geometric shapes, and she occasionally experimented with moving parts and reflective surfaces.

Although Häiväoja's jewelry designs dominate artistic work, she was also successful as a designer of knitwear and as a costume designer . From 1976 to the 1990s, she headed the textile design department at the Helsinki Art and Design College .

Paula Häiväoja lived with her husband Heikki Häiväoja in Vantaa . Their daughter is the sculptor Johanna Häiväoja (born 1960) who works in France and Finland.
