Heikki Häiväoja

Heikki Aulis Häiväoja (born May 25, 1929 in Jämsä ; † September 15, 2019 in Kauniainen ) was a Finnish sculptor , medalist and university lecturer.

Heikki Häiväoja studied from 1947 to 1950 at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and from 1950 to 1951 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki . Since 1950 his work has been presented in exhibitions in Finland and abroad. In 1966, Häiväoja was the Finnish representative at the Biennale di Venezia . His works belong to the inventory of numerous museums, many of which are displayed in public spaces in Finland.

A wide space in Häiväojas creative take grave times one. From 1952 to 2002 he made 51 tombs, including 12 war memorials . In 1981 Heikki Häiväoja and Brita Nickels took part in an exhibition on sepulchral culture in Helsinki Cathedral , which took place as part of the Helsinki Festival . Häiväoja has been designing Finnish coins since 1964, in addition to circulation coins such as those for one or five markka, as well as some special coins for various occasions. Häiväoja's most widespread numismatic work is the Finnish euro coins minted since 1999 for 1 to 50 cents, the design of which shows the coat of arms of Finland . Häiväoja's work as a medalist includes more than 90 medals .

From 1958 to 1970 Häiväoja was a teacher at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, most recently he was Vice-Rector of the university. From 1977 to 1984 he was a teacher and vice-rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki.

Heikki Häiväoja lived with his wife Paula Häiväoja in Vantaa . Their daughter is the sculptor Johanna Häiväoja (born 1960) who works in France and Finland. In his second marriage, Heikki Häiväoja was married to the theologian and art historian Brita Nickels-Häiväoja (1942-2014), who had a doctorate with a thesis on the funerary art of Häiväojas and other Finnish sculptors. A son born in 1986 comes from this connection.
