Pauline Smith

Pauline Janet Smith (born April 2, 1882 in Oudtshoorn , South Africa , † January 29, 1959 in Dorset , England ) was a South African writer .

She grew up in the Little Karoo as the daughter of a doctor and was sent to a boarding school in England at the age of twelve. After that she never returned to South Africa permanently. Her work was based on the experiences of her childhood in the Afrikaans-speaking rural society as well as the visits during which she kept a diary. A collection of short stories, The Little Karoo , appeared in 1925; a year later her novel The Beadle was published . Her earliest stories for children were published in Platkops Children in 1935 .
