Paulo C. Chagas

Paulo C. Chagas (born August 31, 1953 in Salvador da Bahia , Brazil ) is a Brazilian composer, residing in the USA.

Life

Chagas studied first at the Universidade de São Paulo from 1973 to 1979 and later from 1980 to 1982 with Henri Pousseur at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège, and from 1982–89 electronic music at the Cologne University of Music . He received his doctorate from the Université de Liège in 2003 . Chagas worked as the sound director of the electronic music studio of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) from 1990 to 1999, where he carried out extensive research on algorithmic composition, computer music and electronic music, interactivity and multimedia. There he also wrote music software and special computer applications for analysis and composition. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the CRFMW (Center de Recherches et Formation Musicales de Wallonie) in Liège since 1998 and has been a guest at many international festivals in Europe and the USA.

Chagas taught as a visiting professor at the Université de Liège 1991–93 and at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège from 1995–96 and as a professor of composition at the University of California in Riverside since 2004.

Awards

  • In 1977 he received a prize in the First National Composition Competition in Rio de Janeiro
  • 1989 the Prize for l'Opéra Autrement from the Center Acanthes
  • 2001 IAMIC shortlist (for Bonfim).
