Paulo Paulino Guajajara (* around 1993; † November 1, 2019 in Araribóia ), called Lobo ("wolf"), was a Brazilian environmental activist .

Life

Paulo Paulino Guajajara was, along with others like Sônia Guajajara , a leader of the indigenous Guajajára people , who mainly live in the Brazilian state of Maranhão . With around 20,000 people, they are one of the largest indigenous groups in Brazil. In 2012 they founded the group “Guardiões da floresta” (German: “Wächter des Waldes”), which tries to prevent illegal logging activities in the Arariboia protected area in the state of Maranhão through patrols. Paulo Paulino appeared as the group's spokesman for the Reuters agency . He was "one of the most prominent forest protectors in the Amazon".

Paulino was shot dead in November 2019. He was ambushed by at least five illegal loggers and died from a headshot while his companion was shot. A lumberjack has been missing since then. The Brazilian federal police confirmed the incident and dispatched a team to investigate the case.

Critics blame the Brazilian government. Due to budget cuts, the state agency for the protection of indigenous peoples (FUNAI) can hardly carry out its own patrols, and illegal entry into the protected areas of indigenous peoples is therefore hardly punished. Greenpeace said Paulo Paulino and his injured companion were "the latest victims of a state that refuses to comply with the constitution." Sarah Shenker ( Survival International ) told AFP that Paulino had received death threats in the past.
