Pavlova Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and lies between Greater Mackellar Island in the west and Gadget Island in the east.
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip, who belonged to the team of the expedition member Belgrave Ninnis . The dog is named after the Russian dancer Anna Pawlowa (1881–1931), who was friends with Ninnis.
