The Ginger Reef is a reef off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and is north-northwest of Lassesen Island at the northern end of the archipelago.
Participants of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered it. The reef is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip. This in turn got its name because of its coat color ( English ginger , fox red, reddish brown ' ).
