Pavel Andreyevich Fedotov ( Russian Павел Андреевич Федотов ; born June 22 . Jul / 4. July  1815 greg. In Moscow ; † 14 jul. / 26. November  1852 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian painter . He is considered to be the founder of critical realism in Russian art.

life and work

Fedotov grew up in Moscow and started out as an officer. After passing through the First Moscow Cadet Corps in 1833, he served as Ensign in the Life Guard of the Finnish Regiment in Saint Petersburg until 1844. From 1834 he attended the evening class of the local Academy of Arts and was advised by Professors Karl P. Brjullow and Alexander I. Sauerweid ; He did not have a systematic art education. His first works were pencil and watercolor portraits of comrades in the regiment and scenes from field and camp life.

From 1844, Fedotow devoted himself entirely to art. In his more mature phase in the 1840s, he created his oil paintings, with which he became known to a wider audience. “My work in the studio,” said Fedotov himself, “is only a tenth: my main work is on the streets and in strange houses. I study life, I work by looking with both eyes. "

In addition to his painterly talent, Fedotov also had a poetic talent. On some of his pictures he composed comments in verse form. In 1848 Fedotov received the title of member of the Academy of Arts. He took part in the exhibitions of the Academy, the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and the AF Rastoptschins Gallery in Moscow.

It was only through his participation in the socially critical movement of the Petraschewzen that Fedotov came into conflict with the censors and lived in poor conditions until his death. His late work is accordingly gloomy and also characterized by a mental illness. At the age of 37 he died in a psychiatric hospital.

Works in museums

Works by Fedotow are among others in the Moscow Tretyakov Gallery (e.g. "The Freshly Baked Order Bearer", 1846, "The Courtship of a Major", around 1851, or "Young Widow", 1851) and in the St. Petersburg Russian Museum ( eg “Portrait of the Scherbins Children”, 1851, or “Winter's Day. 20th Line of Vasily Island”, around 1851), exhibited.
