Pawel Wassiljewitsch Suljandsiga ( Russian Павел Васильевич Сулянздига , English spelling: Pavel Sulyandziga ; born February 20, 1962 in Olon , Poscharski district , Primorye ) is a Russian activist for the rights of the indigenous peoples of the Russian north . He comes from the Udege ethnic group . Suljandsiga is a member of the Social Chamber of Russia and the UN Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises .

Until 2010 he was also the first vice-president of the Association of Small Indigenous Peoples of the Russian North and a member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Affairs .

Suljandsiga comes from the Bikin region, in the immediate vicinity of the Sichote-Alin nature reserve, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 . The Bikin Valley itself is densely forested and therefore of great interest to the timber industry, at the same time it is one of the last habitats of the Amur tiger . At the end of the 1980s, Suljandsiga played a major role in mobilizing the indigenous Udege population and Russian ecologists to resist logging through a Russian-Korean joint venture with Hyundai's participation . The resistance was initially successful, but the dispute over the protection of the bikini forests flared up again and again.

As the Russian newspaper "Novaja Gazeta" reported on May 3, 2017, citing the website of the "Yabloko" party, Suljandsiga was forced by the Russian secret service to seek political asylum in the USA, which it also did from American soil.
