history
More than 400 archaeological sites indicate the presence of Alaskan indigenous people in the area around present-day Paxson for more than 10,000 years.
In 1906, Alvin Paxson opened the Timberline Roadhouse at mile 192, which consisted of a small log cabin that housed the kitchen and two tents as sleeping barracks. The cook of this rest house, Charles Meier, later went into business for himself with the Meier's Roadhouse at mile 174. Alvin Paxson responded with a two-story building at mile 191.
A post office, a shop and a few other buildings were later built here. In the 1950s, the Denali Highway was built from Paxson to Cantwell .
There are no Native Alaska people in Paxson. The inhabitants are mostly road workers who are entrusted with the maintenance of the highways.
